Why Pass?

Why are we passing when:
1. We are in field goal range with under a minute to go with questionably one of the best field goal kickers in the nation?
2. We have a freshman quarterback who had already proven to make some questionable throws down the stretch?
3. Passing into double coverage in the endzone?
I am a loyal Notre Dame fan and a true believer in Brian Kelly and the "culture" he is trying to bring to Irish Football. With that being said, I can't help but see a little of Charlie Weis' arrogance in Brian Kelly. This game was a must win, considering we need six wins to be bowl eligible. We have a undefeated Utah team coming in and a very athletic USC team on the road left to go. Winning 2 of the next 3 is going to be very difficult. I don't see the reasoning behind throwing the ball into the endzone when you're already in FG position. I am completely baffled and at a lost for words.
I am 28 years old--all I want is for Notre Dame to be a serious BCS National Championship contender ONCE in my adult life. Is this too much to ask for?
