So what? 2.3.2010

Decompression time.
Any activity from the Charlie Weis era came to a close today, Wednesday, February 3, 2010. Brian Kelly couldn’t be more pleased because now, all actions involving the football program will come from his desk. It will be worth the time to watch.
College football really ends on signing day, not in the bowl season. The immediate personnel factors started by Weis are done. All the expected signees signed and all the current players on the roster remain, so far. Kelly even added a few signees himself at the end to sure up the roster for September.
Weis is an offensive coordinator in NFL. Kelly is at his dream job. Recruits are at the school of their choice. Seems like everyone got what the wanted.
So what there not to be excited about? Pretty much the whole thing, that’s what! We’ve been here before. We’ve been excited. We’ve even seen proof on the playing field to justify the excitement. But, boy is the fan base jaded and skeptical. I sure am.
Let’s take some inventory of the past six or so weeks since the Kelly hiring.
Notre Dame got what they’ve needed since Lou Holtz left. They got a successful football coach with a large, exclusive degree of college experience. His track record is very good! He’s has coach an undefeated season at the Division I level. He is an engaging personality. He has set forth a feeling of oneness, team oriented mentality, including making sure everyone organizes their locker the same. All players are together as often as possible including eating together under a structured menu and schedule.
Yes!!! This is good to hear!
During the recruiting season, ND risked with terminating their head coach the potential for lost future talent. Not only was the head coach gone, all but one position coach was gone. No recruit knew this staff. They had no reason to stay.
All but two, however did. Yes!!! Great save by Kelly and his staff!! Plus, he added SIX to the existing list, including athletes who can plan multiple positions and a 6’5” defensive end prospect from the talent-laden Aloha State. They signed 23 in all including at least two if not three high school All-American candidates (depending upon media service). He got top offensive linemen away from his home state! Not many coaches could do this. YOU CANNOT overlook what an accomplishment this was! I don’t care what any other know-it-all recruitnic thinks.
One piece of the puzzle is remaining in the faith of the fan base. We’re burnt. Our trust is damaged. The faith is not lost, but it is fatigued. We’ve been enthusiastic before and look where it got us! We don’t feel like filling the faith tank with high-test optimism, shifting to the floor, and peeling out! We’re looking both ways… check the rear view mirror, side view mirrors, look both way again… back to the mirrors, again. Slowly pull out – oops, is that a car coming down the road? Better not go…. Repeat the prior actions…
We’re going to need to watch and see. There’s nothing else to be said. The spring game won’t answer anything either. It never does nor should it.
Even the upcoming season has its questions. If ND beats Michigan and USC, we’ll likely be skeptical on the quality of those teams. If ND were to run the table, which I wouldn’t
rule out, would we trust it? Would we trust winning the first nine games? Weis looked good for two years; will we need three from Kelly? Let’s face it, we’re stressed and tense.
What we probably need more than anything is a break. Perfect timing. Thing will be quiet until late March through April when the spring drill start. Then it is a long three-month rest until fall camp in August. The fan base will need this.
We’ll still check the sites. Who are we kidding? But decompression is due and it should start tomorrow. I’ll enjoy the signatures from today. Good luck, Coach Kelly. Millions of fans are waiting and watching.

Martin was visiting other places and all but de-commited well before Weis was fired. Hurd and Bernard really are not great propects and can be replaced in next years class with better players.. Leuders was a loss, but, again there will be good players next year.
Nice peace here SO. But, I can't wait for those spring drills!!!Posted 02-05-2010 at 10:18 AM by psdo51
